This class focused on how to bring new hires into the union as active participants, not just passive dues-payers. We will look at ways to make every member an organizer so that they become committed to the local union.
Making new employees aware of the benefits of the union is a major part of this, so if you have a lot of turnover in your unit, this workshop will be a big help. The session covered ways to make the first meeting exciting and will emphasize the importance of contract language and member benefits.
New hires need to understand the contributions made by the union to the quality of worklife in a way that encourages them to join, even in an open shop situation. We shared Best Union Practices from various unions across the country who have recognized the importance of bringing new hires into the life of the union.
