A more union-oriented National Labor Relations Board has issued a flurry of decisions changing what “the law” says. Union rights have been significantly expanded in areas like illegal changes in working conditions once a contract expires, and remedies for unfair labor practices. So it's now critical for union negotiators to have a firm grasp of the changing basics of labor law so that they can hold their own at the bargaining table.

This zoom session will cover the essentials of labor law that union negotiators in the private sector need to know: understanding "good faith bargaining"; how to use legal mechanisms to force your employer to furnish information; knowing the legal implications of the “subjects of bargaining” (mandatory, permissive and unlawful topics); legal and unlawful tactics that can be part of a contract campaign; and impasse resolution (mediation, imposition of “last, best offer”, and strikes and lockouts.)

Michael Mauer has worked as an attorney with the National Labor Relations Board and in the AFSCME General Counsel's office, and as an attorney / negotiator with a number of unions, including serving as Director of Organizing and Services for the American Association of University Professors and Director of Collective Bargaining for SEIU. His publications include The Union Member’s Complete Guide, Welcome to the Union, and Academic Collective Bargaining. His faculty experience includes teaching in the labor studies programs at the AFL-CIO’s National Labor College, the University of Illinois, and Ton Duc Thang University in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
