These days, new teachers enroll in their union when they're hired. It's just one more paper you fill out in your hiring packet and ends up being one more deduction on your paycheck. The explosive history of teacher unionism is hidden from us. Murphy's book looks at the foundation of the National Education Association (chartered by Congress, led by administrators) and the American Federation of Teachers (formed female elementary teachers). The research is strong, the writing is solid and the book is interesting. The NEA debacle in Florida deserves much wider study by teachers trying to understand their unions.
