If you work in an open shop situation, the number of non-members is always an issue. They cut your bargaining power, which hurts every member as well as the union’s income. Also important are the members who pay dues but don’t participate in union activities.
So let’s start signing those free riders up and getting all of them involved.
This session will walk you through setting up an internal organizing campaign, using the book Closing Up the Open Shop: A Guide to Internal Organizing.
You will learn how to create sharp strategies and pick good issues to utilize. We will discuss getting all of your members involved in building, or rebuilding, your union as they recognize that it’s in their self-interest to do so.
Bill Barry will be the instructor. Bill was an organizer for several unions, across the country, for 20 years and then was the Director of Labor Studies at The Community College of Baltimore County for 15 years.
